HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY!
Kitty took his annual trek to visit Santa. SANTA!!! And, I sewed him a Christmas themed bow-tie just for the occasion.
Now, I know what you are thinking, “I want a bow-tie for the holidays!!” Bow-ties originated among Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars of the 17th century, who used fabric pieces to tie the tops of their uniforms closed, and they have come into and out of fashion since then. They have definitely gained momentum in the last decade, and are not just for distinguished Kitties either. Kids, women, hipsters, nerds and grampas alike are ALL sporting this formally formal attire.
Well, you are in luck. Below are some patterns and instructions on how to sew your own bow-tie. (just click on the pics.)
This one’s from Martha. Can Martha do EVERYTHING? It includes pattern, instructions and a handy how-to video.
The next instructional gem is brought to you by Tie a Tie. An entire website dedicated to ties of all sorts! Yes, please.
The last pattern comes from the purveyor of the most fabulous fabrics…Liberty! How perfect is this animal themed fabric for a bow-tie?
Not a traditionalist and want a unique shape to your bow-tie? Ponoko has 7 different bow-tie templates for you to choose from.
And, now that you’ve sewn it (the easy part), how do you tie it?? (the hard part) Well, if at some point during the tying process, you wish that you could just go to the party in your underwear, I’ve got you covered. Here’s how to tie your masterpiece!
And, if these instructions still leave you wanting to tie your bow-tie around a brick and throw it in the ocean, there is hope for you too! Here are instructions for a No Tie Bow-Tie from Instructables. So easy to assemble and as long as nobody gets too close, no one knows but you (and the cat. But the cat knows everything. Always. So, you can’t win.)
Till Next Year! I hope everybody enjoys a peaceful and loving holiday season.

Love that you’ve included how to tie these tie ~ Happy Christmas & a joyous New Year!
Tying is DEFINITELY the most difficult part! Especially if you are one of ‘those’ people and need to get it just ‘right’ (cough, like me, cough) Happy Holidays Del! 🙂
Brilliant, funny and useful post. Many thanks and Happy Christmas to you too.
Aw, thank you fabrickated!! I didn’t just want to post a pic and say Merry Merry and the like. I likes me some learnin’ any time of the year. 🙂
well as usual kitty has a great blog with santa & everything you could possibly want to know about bow ties. Have a great Christmas, kitty hopes that santa leaves him something special.
Kitty’s pic came out SO awesome this year. And, yes, I definitely tried to cover ALL the angles on bow-ties. Why not?
What did Kitty for ask from Santa? More fabric perhaps? Best Wishes for 2015 in all your sewing adventures!
Thank You mrsmole, Happy Holidays to you too! And, Kitty asked Santa for world domination (naturally). I, on the other paw, asked for more fabric. Moooorrrrreeee fabric. 🙂
I love your posts- history, education, scared old white men, Kitteh!!!
We are delighted, once again, to please! And, really, doesn’t the expression on Santa’s face make you double over in gales of laughter. He can’t speak but his eyes say: “Help me, I’m being held against my will. I believe it may be a Kitteh jedi mind trick….” 🙂 🙂
🙂 so cute! Merry Christmas!
Thanks Kriston! Hope you have a terrific Christmas and eat all the things!
Oh, kitty is so adorable! Merry Christmas!
Kitty doesn’t have to do much to win over an audience, does he? I might add that there were also dozens of dogs at this “meet the Santa” event that he took calmly and in stride!
These pictures made my day. Merry Christmas to you and Kitty from me and Orson!
Aw, I’m so glad Morgan! The one with Santa looking ever so nervous makes me snort with laughter. Have a terrific Christmas and hope to see Orson next year at the next Meet the Santa event!
I am surprised Kitty sat still for that, mine wouldn’t! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your’s!
Thanks Linda! Hope you have a great holiday. And, Kitty is rather surprising for a cat. He swims (!) and he gets on with dogs (!). In fact, there were dozens of dogs (as well as their humans), along with lots of barking, at this Santa event and Kitty was cool as a cucumber.
I am impressed! 😀
I think I might have to make a bow tie now. We always have a “black tie” dinner in January. Time for his Lordship to have a new tie methinks! Those links will be very helpful. Merry Christmas to you and Kitty. Hope you have a lovely break! xx
Oooooh, any one of these would be perfect for a ‘black tie’ event! And, you could totally funk it up by selecting a disco fabulous fabric print while leaving the rest of your outfit conservative. If you sew one for your cat, you KNOW, we MUST see it!! Happy Holidays Nikki!
Oh kitty looks so handsome in his bow tie and definitely looks like he’s looking over his kingdom.
Wishing both you and Kitty a fabulous Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2015. Hugs and paw pats from Zoe and me xx
Happy Christmas and Happy Trails to you and Grant and Zoe! I hope your travels are fun. Kitty is resting today after all his important kingdomly duties.
Cute post, delightful kitty. Happy Festivus!
Thanks Alyss! Hope your holidays were great and that your guests enjoyed your lovely festive gardens.
Thank you. Our new year is almost upon us.
So many fabulous bow ties! And I hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas 🙂
You too poppykettle! I just thought of another way to use the bow-ties that you sew: use them in place of ribbon bows on gifts!
Same to you, Amanda! I just saw the knit nativity scene your mum made for you! Ahh, so lovely! I’m going to show my mum who is the knitter in our family.
It is an Alan Dart pattern we downloaded from his website. It’s called The Natural Nativity.
I should have added that to my post! Will do now! 💝
Oh, thanks for the link!
Squee! Kitty is adorable in his bow-tie! Poor Santa looks braced for an unexpected attack (I’m sure most other cats are more disagreeable about sitting on Santa’s lap!) but Kitty’s just lounging there like he’s super comfortable, hehe. I think Kitty may be the world’s most cooperative photographic cats!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Kitty!
Hi Brooke, hope you had a terrific Christmas! And, I think you are correct! I assumed Santa was being controlled by Kitty’s Jedi mind-tricks, but he’s likely thinking “please don’t scratch me, please don’t scratch me, please…..” 🙂 Little does Santa know who he’s dealing with.
Kitty looks so fancy in his new bowtie with Santa!! I had no idea about the back story on bowties, thank you so much for posting it all. I’ve only made a couple of bowties (for an infant to look adorable in), but I thought they were just darling and I wish more people would wear them!
Kitty does rock the bow-tie, doesn’t he? He has the neck for it. 😉 Oooooh, infant bow-ties!! Something I never thought of as a gift for my nephews. That’s a good idea though. And, yes, honestly, who doesn’t look pretty snazzy in a bow-tie? It seems to be one of those accessories that can’t go too wrong. Happy New Year Kristin!
A Festivus for the rest of us!! Happy Christmas to you and Kitty, and hope you had a wonderful New Year as well – Kitty is looking fabulous as always – he truly suits the bow tie look 🙂 Hope you are doing well 🙂 Much love!! XOXO
Exactly!! Happy New Year Amanda! Kitty has the neck and face for a bow-tie, does he not? And, nothing is more delightful than a tiny kitty making a large, bearded Santa just a bit nervous. 🙂 Hope you are enjoying your fairly mild west coast winter weather! At least this Christmas, even thought it was chilly, our power stayed ON! Cheers! xo
Came round to say hello and see if I missed a new post 😀 I could have sworn I left a message here before? The Santa photo still makes me laugh. He’s smiling so nervously, LOL Kitty’s such a star. Hugs K
Hey, Happy Valentine’s Day, Kelly!! I’ve got to get around to finally posting a new post! This Christmas one is ‘dating’ my blog.
Thanks Catja, Happy Valentines to you and Kitty! Have an awesome weekend!
I love kitty’s bow tie and that he went to see Santa. And the how to tie a bow tie is really interesting and informative. Thanks
You are most welcome for the info, nothy lane! Tying a bow-tie is definitely not child’s play. 🙂 And, this is Kitty’s 3rd year to go and see Santa. He gets pretty stoked about it.
